Job Summary
A Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Technician inspects, diagnoses, maintains, and repairs commercial vehicles like tractor-trailers, dump trucks, and buses. They are responsible for keeping fleets safe and compliant, working extensively with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air brakes, and complex computerized diagnostics.
Duties
- Diagnostics: Use advanced computer-based diagnostic software and multimeters to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and emission system failures.
- Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine servicing, including oil changes, fluid flushes, and DOT-mandated safety and compliance inspections.
- Mechanical Repairs: Disassemble, repair, and overhaul heavy components such as internal combustion engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, and steering mechanisms.
- Air Brakes & Suspension: Inspect, adjust, or completely replace brake linings, wheel bearings, and suspension or steering parts.
- Documentation: Accurately log all maintenance performed, parts used, and repair times in fleet management software
- Experience: Typically 2–5+ years of hands-on experience working in heavy-duty commercial, industrial, or dealership environments.
- Preferred Licensing: A valid driver's license is required, with a generally preferred or mandatory for test-driving and road-service calls.
- Physical Stamina: The ability to lift heavy equipment, stand for long periods, and work in various weather conditions or sometimes cramped positions.
- Typically shop-based at dealerships, logistics centers, or municipal garages, but may involve roadside emergency service calls.
- Often requires working with specialized hand tools, pneumatic tools, and precision measuring instruments.
