Hybrid Position Summary. The Controller is the chief accounting officer, responsible for the tactical implementation and oversight of all accounting operations. This hands-on role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of financial records and reporting. The Controller manages the daily functions of the accounting team, maintains strong internal controls, and ensures compliance with all regulatory standards. The Controller will work with the Chief Executive Officer and the Management Team to develop and prepare Sail’s financial forecasts and reports for presentation to the Board, strategic partners and investors. Ideally, the Controller will have a deep understanding of the energy distribution market.
Controller Primary Accountabilities.
- Supervise the accurate and timely processing of invoices, expense reports, cash receipts, and vendor payments.
- Oversight of daily cash balances, bank reconciliations and cash disbursements.
- Ensure the accurate and timely processing of payroll, tax remittances, in collaboration with a third-party provider.
- Oversee and maintain proper recording and allocation of all financial transactions in the general ledger.
- Liaise with network/IT security vendor and operations on initiates and day-to-day operations support.
- Manage investor cap table and interact with individual investors.
- Work with Senior and Subordinate lenders to maintain compliance with covenants and reporting.
- Review tax returns prepared by outside accounting firm, submit payments to federal and state agencies and deliver K-1s as necessary.
- Lead and execute the entire month-end close processes, including preparing and posting journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations to ensure financial statements are closed accurately and on schedule.
- Produce comprehensive and timely monthly and quarterly financial statements, such as balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, in compliance with accounting standards like GAAP or IFRS.
- Responsible for annual budget of insurance and technology spend.
- Implement, monitor, and enforce internal control procedures and accounting policies to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.
- Coordinate all internal and external financial audit activities, compiling all necessary documentation, managing the flow of information, and ensuring all audit issues are resolved, and all compliance issues are met.
- Troubleshoot issues with financial systems and collaborate with the IT support vendors to ensure financial modules are functioning properly.
- Oversee maintenance of the inventory of all fixed assets assuring all are in accordance with federal and state regulations.
- Builds and manages the Accounting team; develops internal capabilities. Achieves a high level of employee engagement through a collaborative work environment, based upon mentorship, coaching and employee development free of any forms of harassment.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience: 10+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, with a proven track record in management.
- Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
- Deep knowledge of GAAP, tax regulations, investor requirements, federal and state-level energy incentives, and tax equity structures.
- Hands-on proficiency with financial systems (e.g., forecasting tools, Intacct, Cargas preferred), and advanced Excel skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail and strong analytical skills for data-driven tactical execution and problem-solving.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skills.
- Strong understanding of project finance, capital structuring, and M&A. Demonstrated ability to lead budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and strategic planning in a private equity environment helpful.
- High level of integrity, ethical standards, professionalism and ability to maintain discretion.
- Self-motivated with a high degree of comfort working independently in managing priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a Leadership team.
- An analytical and curious mind, excited for continuous growth and improvement.
