White Mountain Paper Company began operations in 2021 after Behrens Investment Group acquired the mill property. While the company is new, the site itself has a long papermaking history that goes back to the late 1800s. Located along the Androscoggin River, WMPC manufactures high-quality bath tissue, facial tissue, and towel products using FSC-certified fiber and a sustainable energy mix. Our operation is centered around a modern 102" crescent former and a team committed to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Position Overview
White Mountain Paper Company is seeking an entry-level Spare / Utility Operator to support daily mill operations across multiple areas of the facility. This role is designed for a flexible team member who can assist wherever needed, including tissue machine support, stock preparation, shipping and receiving, inventory handling, roll wrapping, housekeeping, and general operational tasks.
This position plays an important part in helping production run safely and efficiently. The successful candidate will follow written and verbal instructions, support production schedules, observe equipment and process conditions, and assist in maintaining an organized, productive, and safe work environment.
What You’ll Do
- Assist in day-to-day operations throughout the paper mill as assigned
- Support tissue machine operations and surrounding process areas
- Help with stock prep activities and maintaining material availability for production
- Perform roll wrapping and finished goods handling
- Assist with shipping, receiving, unloading, loading, and storage of materials and finished product
- Operate powered industrial vehicles safely and effectively when qualified
- Follow GMP, safety, housekeeping, and 6S expectations throughout the facility
- Inspect equipment and processes using sight, sound, and smell to identify abnormal conditions
- Recognize mechanical concerns such as worn belts, bearings, motors, gears, and similar components
- Perform routine checks and help initiate maintenance work orders when issues are found
- Assist with housekeeping and facility upkeep to maintain clean, organized work areas
- Maintain accurate logs, notes, and records related to operations, maintenance, and equipment conditions
- Use company digital tools and applications to report maintenance, safety, and equipment issues
- Work from production schedules, written instructions, work orders, and standard operating procedures
- Support training efforts and participate in ongoing learning and annual qualification requirements
- Work with maintenance personnel, contractors, and other departments on projects and operational needs
- Help support general facility work within your training and qualification level, including tasks tied to upkeep and improvement projects
- Contribute ideas for process improvement, modernization, and operational efficiency
- Complete other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- At least 1 year of experience in paper manufacturing, industrial production, manufacturing, warehouse operations, or a similar environment preferred, or demonstrated ability to perform the job successfully
- Ability to complete required annual training, qualifications, and competency assessments
- Ability to successfully complete job-related and safety-related training, including topics such as powered industrial vehicles, fall protection, confined space, and electrical awareness, as assigned through the LMS
- Mechanical aptitude and sound problem-solving ability
- Ability to work independently as well as with a team
- Ability to clearly document inspections, maintenance observations, repairs, and equipment concerns
- Ability to read and understand safety procedures, work instructions, schematics, drawings, equipment information, and safety data sheets
- Ability to communicate effectively through written notes, email, and digital reporting tools
- Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios, and simple formulas
- Ability to use measuring tools and understand standard units of measurement
Physical Requirements
- Frequent bending, reaching, and stooping
- Ability to lift and carry materials, tools, and equipment up to 50 pounds
- Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively
- Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the shift
- Ability to climb stairs and move throughout an industrial facility
- Ability to qualify for safe operation of powered industrial vehicles
Work Environment
This position works in an active industrial paper mill setting. Team members may be exposed to:
- High noise levels
- Dust and airborne particles
- Wet or slippery surfaces
- Hot and cold temperatures
- Hazardous chemicals
- Frequent forklift and equipment traffic
- Heavy industrial machinery and moving mechanical parts
Appropriate PPE is required, and employees are expected to follow all company safety rules, procedures, and safe work practices at all times.
