The Trade is a new and bold alternative for young adults navigating challenges with anxiety, executive functioning, and/or neuro-divergence as they strive to get fully grounded into adulthood. Based in a rustic lodge on 2,000 acres in New Hampshire, our live-in apprenticeship program combines hard work, real-life responsibility, the healing power of the outdoors and community living to foster true independence.
Through hands-on trade work, learning life skills, mentorship, and the support of an intentionally crafted work culture, apprentices earn their way forward and build the tools they need to confidently move into independent young adulthood.

Openings: Life Skills Mentor
Compensation: $20.00-$25.00/per hour
Location: Pike, NH
Total Hours/Week: 40 hours/Week

Wed-Fri 3pm-11pm, Sat 8am-8-pm
Position Summary
Life Skills Mentors support apprentices by teaching and modeling the skills that fall outside of the work day. Based out of the Black Mountain Lodge, these mentors play an active role in social connection, development of independent living skills, and overall wellness—while also facilitating outdoor activities and reflective conversations. They work alongside our
Assistant Director of Home Life to ensure that residential, life, and personal skill building and experiences are robust, engaging, and directly connected to leading a satisfying adult life.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach and model adulting skills (e.g., cooking, hygiene, budgeting, cleaning, communication)
- Support apprentices in group and individual activities
- Facilitate informal reflection, community-building, and problem-solving
- Help maintain a structured, emotionally safe environment
- Work alongside apprentices and, sometimes alone, to keep the operation of the lodge running smoothly
- Engage actively in outdoor recreation and group activities

Participant Profile:
Our participants are young adults who have felt lost and directionless. They are likely living at home with their parents, are emotionally immature, are transitioning from residential treatment and/or may have high functioning ASD with some anxiety and/or depression. They feel isolated and disconnected from their peers, but desire connection. They may have started college and may have attended therapy or a transition program, but without long-term success.
Their Current Challenges:
- Lacks motivation
- Struggles with follow-through and accountability
- Anxiety, mild depression, or executive functioning difficulties
- Heavy reliance on screens and digital entertainment
- Difficulty securing and maintaining employment
- Feels disconnected from peers and community but wants connection
Their Strengths and Aspirations:
- Creative, intelligent, or curious but unstructured
- Wants to be independent but doesn’t know how
- Enjoys hands-on learning but lacks confidence in work settings
- Desires meaningful friendships and community
- Open to mentorship and experiential growth
Hiring Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid driver's license required & 21 years of age
- Authorized to work in the United States
- Satisfactory completion of background screening and applicable pre-employment checks
- Must possess stability in their own adulthood and be able to confidently act as a mentor to others in developing those skills.
- Strong interpersonal and teaching skills
- Experience working in education, human services, recreation, or related fields
- Passion for experiential learning
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and feedback
