Category: Full-time/12-month/exempt position
The Athletic Director is responsible for the leadership and vision of all aspects of athletics and afternoon programs. The Athletic Director has oversight for varsity, junior varsity sports, as well as Brewster’s premier basketball teams. The Athletic Director is responsible for the supervision, growth, and development of the Assistant Director of Athletics, Athletic Trainers, Equipment Room Coordinator, Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and Afternoon activities program leaders. The Athletic Director is a visible campus leader who partners with various colleagues and constituents, including parents, faculty, residential life, enrollment management, college counseling, advancement, and administrators.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day leadership to all members of the Athletic Department and Afternoon Program Leaders.
- Provides leadership for 30+ interscholastic teams and 20+ afternoon arts and athletic enrichment programs (studio arts, theatre, music, robotics, rec ski, yearbook, yoga, etc.)
- Responsible for the onboarding, growth, and development of all coaches, ensuring alignment with the school’s vision, mission, and ethos.
- Ensure a positive, supportive experience for students that aligns with the overall mission of the school.
- Collaborate with the Director of Facilities to ensure all athletic facilities are set up and maintained properly.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Head of School for Campus Life and the Director of Finance on the development of the budget for athletics and afternoon programs.
- Collaborate with the Admissions Department to recruit mission-appropriate students and to serve as a bridge between varsity coaches and admissions professionals.
- Develop competitive varsity and junior varsity schedules that ensure a balanced number of games and ensure equity between all sports.
- Responsible for scheduling athletic events, hiring game officials, and coordinating travel for all athletic events.
- Develops diverse co-curricular programs that offer engaging opportunities for all students.
- Participate in the faculty recruitment process to help attract and retain teachers/coaches.
- Lead weekly/bi-weekly meetings with athletic staff, including Assistant AD, Equipment Coordinator, and Athletic Trainers.
- Plan and lead annual/seasonal meetings with coaching staff.
- Meet with varsity coaches regularly to provide support and assist as needed with student recruitment and fundraising efforts.
- Ensure there is a game-day site administrator for home games.
- Plan and organize the Hall of Fame celebration, athletic awards, and national signing day
- Collaborates with the Student Health Center, coaches, and athletic trainers to ensure the health and safety of all students.
- Ensures the school is in compliance with all relevant league and state regulations.
- Committee memberships: School Community Directors and faculty hiring team, NEPSAC
- Serves as a positive, visible member of the school community, attending events, such as community dinners, faculty meetings, all-school meetings, commencement, etc.
- Serve as a dean on duty, reside on campus.
Requirements
Skills and Qualifications:
- The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in sports management, physical education, or a related field, master's degree preferred.
- Previous experience in athletic administration, required
- Experience in an independent school setting is preferred but not required.
- Exceptional communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to collaborate across departments.
- Passion for athletics and education.
